In the past post I mentioned that I went traveling for 4 months. This was about 3 months ago, but I have already booked a flight ticket for my next one which I will be going in a week. Travel has always had a place in my heart, I cannot go over 3 months without it.
I always used to plan out everything before going, like where I would be staying, for how many days, places to visit, where to eat – literally EVERYTHING, Planning ahead and sticking to my plans has always been my nature for everything whether it be studying, work, traveling, or even what to do on daily basis. But throughout this 4 month travel I realized that planning is not always the best thing to do. The reasons that I decided not to plan out everything this time was 1. I wanted to change that part of me and 2. I wanted it to be a stress free travel. As dramatic as it may sound the main purpose of this travel was for me to find out what makes me happy and what I wanted to do with my life, so I wanted to spend my time while I travelled without having to stick with my plans and getting stressed out or disappointed whenever I couldn’t.
All I did before going was to roughly plan where to go and which route to take. I decided to start from Asia since I am based in Japan, and then to Europe, North America, Central America, and then to South America. I planned everything else very last minute, even my flight tickets, accommodations, and transportations. For flight tickets I used Skyscanner, Hipmunk and Kayak, and got the cheapest one. I am also a big fan of Airbnb, I tried to do it as much as possible because you can meet the locals and also there are many places that you can stay for cheaper prices. When I was in Venice I stayed in a room of a very friendly family’s house, they were very helpful and they recommended all those local places and restaurants that were not tourist traps, and it made my stay in Venice an amazing experience.
When I was traveling, there were so many times that I decided to change my plan and stay longer at one place, or go some countries or cities spontaneously because some people recommended or I just felt like it, and I absolutely loved the feeling of it. I didn’t really have to care about time and I felt like I was stress free. I was also able to meet so many people and spend time with them, and really, what better way to find out about good local places?
I highly recommend traveling without planning too much, especially if you are well travelled. There would be so many encounters and experiences that you would have never expected or you could have never planned.
